Leon Mendonca who faced the modern continuation 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3
4...Nbd7 in the Queen's Gambit Declined in his game with GM Rauf
Mamdedov at the French Championship 2023. The young chess genius
decided for practical reasons not to get involved with the variations
after 5.Bf4 dxc4 6.e3 b5 and introduced familiar structures with 5.cxd5
exd5 6.Bg5 h6 7.Bh4 c6. This is also the position from which Mendonca's
analysis starts.

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Curiously, during the World Championship match,
Ding has only faced the Spanish. I was eager to find out if he still
recalls all the move orders of the Italian. Seltsamerweise hat Ding

Principled, but the sacrifice is just too dangerous in this particular
version. Instead, Black could try to play it safer. 10...Kh8?! that I
suggested, wasn't great in view of 11.g4! which occured to me during
the game as well, but instead 10...Be6 wasn't terrible. Prinzipiell,

preparation didn't go much deeper here and the only thing I recollected
was that in a position very similar to this one, there is Be6 Nf1 Bxf2+
Ke2! idea. Das Vernünftigste. Die Ideen von Schwarz sind

Sometimes you make a move and you feel it is bad. My idea was to meet
Nb8 with d4, but I had in general underestimated the Nf5+ idea, even
though initially it was what I had intended. Manchmal macht man einen

back into it. I think at this point both myself and my opponent were
too confused by the position and each other's moves, so in a way we
both took a pause in calculating and decided to just make some random

could verify was that White is on the good side of things. Although I
suspected I had more at some point, I still wasn't too unhappy with the
situation. The time trouble was looming as well. An diesem Punkt begann

otherwise it would have been a very unpleasant surprise. Black gets to
stay in the game due to some nice geometry. Zum Glück hatte ich
diesen Zug vorausgesehen, denn sonst wäre es eine sehr unangenehme
Überraschung gewesen. Schwarz kann dank einer schönen

Kf8 26.dxe6 and a surprising perpetual mechanism with 26...Qe4+!.

22...Bxh3? A very desperate idea, and actually Ding was thinking in the
right direction, but this is not exactly the way to do it. Eine sehr
