The 2020 Olympiad was very strange for me. The Rapid format, the structure of national teams, playing these games in my home office, never meeting in person with my teammates.... It was a bit unsettling along with the fact that the USA did not have the strongest team it could have had. The good part of that was that it gave exposure to players who ordinarily would not have had the chance and they did a stupendous job!
This game was played in the Semi-Finals of the 2020 Online Olympiad. Our opponents are the mighty Russian Team with a full force lineup consisting of their best men's and women's players coupled with talented Junior players (Esipenko and Sarana).
This is the second match. We lost the first to a narrow margin of 3.5-2.5 and had to make up for it in this one in order to reach the tiebreak Armageddon.
Die Olmpiade 2020 war sehr seltsam für mich. Das Rapid-Format, die Struktur der Nationalmannschaften, diese Partien in meinem Homeoffice spielend, meinen Teamkameraden nie persÃnlich begegnend... Es war ein bisschen verwirrend, hinzu kam die Tatsache, dass die USA nicht das stärkste Team hatte, das mÃglich gewesen wäre. Das Gute daran war, das sich Spieler zeigen konnten, die normalerleise keine Chance bekommen hätten, und sie schlugen sich fabelhaft!
Diese Partie wurde im Halbfinale der Online-Olympiade 2020 gespielt. Unsere Gegner sind das mächtige russische Team mit einer kraftvollen Besetzung, bestehend aus ihren besten Spielern und Spielerinnen, gepaart mit talentierten Junioren (Esipenko and Sarana).
Dies ist das zweite Match. Das erste verloren wir knapp mit 3.5-2.5 und mussten nunmehr aufholen, um den Armageddon-Stichkampf zu erreichen. 1.e4 Since we were lower rated in all boards except the Boys U20 (Xiong vs Esipenko) I knew I had to try to win the White game for our team to have a realistic chance of coming back. I'm curious to find out whether Alex specifically prepared this move, or just had some ideas. It's not clear to me what the idea is or the difference between the bishop here or on b6. Maybe it's a prophylactic move, with the idea to transfer his knight to the kingside later via e7-g6.

Alex hatte nur noch ein paar Sekungen, daher spielten wir a tempo. In dem Wettrennen ist WeiÃY einfach viel schneller. 42.g6 with the î?¦f7-î?¨h6-î?¦h7 mate idea like in my game against Aronian! (Aronian-So, Norwegen 2019 (Armageddon)) 42...Rf8 43.Kg5 c3 44.Ne7+ Kg7 45.Nf5+ Kg8 46.Rxf8+ Kxf8 47.Kf6 Winning the pawn race by a tempo. Gewinnt das Bauernwettrennen mit einem Tempo. 47...Rxd6+ [47...Rf3 48.g7+ Kg8 49.d7+- White promotes first. I actually miss games like this, and competing with top players like Grischuk. Thanks to Covid competitive chess has all but disappeared, and what we have are online blitz/semi-blitz games which for the most part are similar to video games for me. They are for kids. Still, I'm grateful to the organizers and to the FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich for taking the initiative and putting up strong online tournaments. I mean he didn't have to make the effort. A lot of other tournaments just outright cancelled and he could have done the same with the Olympiad. Instead he tried hard to pull something together that involved as many players as possible and I am sure it was a lot of work for him and his team. In short, I am grateful he did it and made the best of the circumstances.
In the end this win was not enough as we lost the match to Russia 3.5-2.5 and 3-3. But I felt anything could have happened in the match and at some point we had a good chance. I would like to congratulate the winners Russia and India for a well deserved victory! Dies war eine sehr amüsante und kreative Partie für beide Spieler. Ich vermisse solche Begegnungen, und das Sichmessen mit Topspielern wie Grischuk. Dank Covid ist Wettkampfschach praktisch verschwinden, und was wir haben, sind Online-Blitz-/Semiblitzpartien, die in meinen Augen grÃÃYtenteils Videospielen ähneln. Sie sind für Kids. Dennoch bin ich den Veranstaltern und FIDE-Präsident Arkady Dvorkovich dankbar, dass sie Initiative ergreifen und starke Online-Turniere auf die Beine stellen. Ich meine, die Mühe musste er sich ja nicht machen. Viele andere Turniere wurden einfach abgesagt, und genauso hätte er auch mit der Olympiade verfahren kÃnnen. Stattdessen setzte er alles daran, etwas zu organisieren, wo so viele Spieler wie mÃglich dabeisein konnten, und ich bin sicher, es war eine Menge Arbeit für ihn und sein Team. Kurz, ich bin dankbar, dass er es tat und das Beste aus den Umständen machte.
Am Ende war dieser Sieg nicht genug, denn wir verloren das Match gegen Russland 3.5-2.5 und 3-3. Aber ich meine, dass alles hätte passieren kÃnnen und wir an einer Stelle eine gute Chance hatten. Ich mÃchte den Gewinnern Russland und Indien zu einem wohlverdienten Sieg gratulieren! 1-0
